The Five SCRUM Values

We’ve talked about how Scrum is like a flexible recipe that requires transparency, regular inspection, and the ability to adapt. Now, let’s dive into the heart of Scrum: the values that make it all work. These values are like the secret ingredients that help teams succeed. Just like a great cake needs the right mix of ingredients, a Scrum team needs the right mix of values.

The Scrum Values

There are five important values in Scrum that help teams work together and reach their goals:

1. Commitment:

The team promises to reach their goals and help each other out. It’s like everyone in your baking team agreeing to do their best to make the perfect cake. When everyone is committed, the team can achieve great things.

2. Focus:

The team concentrates on the tasks for the Sprint to make sure they make good progress. It’s like focusing on one step of the recipe at a time instead of trying to do everything at once. By focusing, the team can avoid distractions and get things done efficiently.

3. Openness:

Everyone talks about the work and any problems they face. It’s like being honest about how the cake is turning out. If the batter is too runny or the oven isn’t hot enough, everyone shares their thoughts so that adjustments can be made. Openness ensures that problems are addressed early.

4. Respect:

Team members believe in each other’s abilities and treat each other well. It’s like trusting that your friend knows the right amount of sugar to add or how to mix the batter perfectly. Respect helps build a positive and collaborative environment.

5. Courage:

The team is brave enough to tackle tough problems and do what’s right. It’s like having the courage to try a new recipe or to start over if the cake doesn’t turn out right the first time. Courage helps the team face challenges head-on and find solutions.

Beliefs vs. Values

Check out this post on the beliefs that underpin the SCRUM values.

Living the Scrum Values

These values guide how the team works and behaves. Every decision they make and every step they take should show these values. As they work together, they learn more about these values and how important they are. Imagine if everyone in your baking team followed these values—your cake would turn out amazing every time!

Building Trust and Making Scrum Work

When everyone on the team and the people they work with share these values, it helps build trust. It’s like knowing you can rely on your friends to follow the recipe and help out when needed. Trust makes everything run smoother and makes Scrum really work.

Wrapping It Up

The five Scrum values—Commitment, Focus, Openness, Respect, and Courage—are like the secret ingredients that make your team successful. By embracing these values, the team can work better together, overcome challenges, and create amazing results.

So, as you work on your projects, remember to sprinkle in these Scrum values. They’ll help you and your team stay on track and achieve your goals, one Sprint at a time.
